While major clothing brands often face challenges in adopting sustainable practices—due to their size and reliance on overproduction—smaller and newer labels inherently lean towards sustainability as part of their core values. One such example is Miomojo, an Italian brand known for producing vegan bags crafted from innovative materials. Their most recent Impact Report details the strides they have made over the past year.

“We pushed the boundaries of material science, expanded our inquiries, and formed impactful partnerships. Our collaborations ranged from sports with Udinese Calcio to direct activism with Sea Shepherd, alongside our alliance with AIPD and efforts with Humana,” stated founder Claudia Pievani, reflecting on their key milestones.

The brand anchors its sustainability approach on four foundational tenets: social justice, innovative materials, environmental responsibility, and active engagement in advocacy.

Materials and Innovation

In 2024, Miomojo reported that 50% of their materials were bio-based, sourced from agricultural waste like orange peels, olives, bamboo, and rice. Additionally, 32% stemmed from recycled materials, with 13% comprised of certified natural fibers. The remaining five percent originated from groundbreaking innovations such as mycelium, grape, tea, and marble.

The brand showcased four unique collections, each centered around a specific material. Their mantra, “Every material is a statement. We don’t take the easy route; we choose what makes sense,” reflects their commitment to thoughtful design.

Environmental Responsibility

In 2024, Miomojo utilized sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for 27% of its air transport, partnering with DHL’s GoGreen Plus initiative, which led to a 24.7% reduction in CO₂ emissions.

“We minimized travel, favored train journeys, opted for economy class—even on long-haul flights. Every logistical detail was optimized, initiating a shift towards reusable packaging for our e-commerce shipments,” the team at Miomojo explained.

Activism and Responsibility

Embracing the philosophy of “Avoiding harm is not enough; you must take a stand,” Miomojo has consistently donated 10% of its profits since its inception to organizations focused on safeguarding animals, biodiversity, and human rights.

In 2024, they launched the “Guardians of the Sea” campaign in collaboration with Sea Shepherd and the Seaqual Initiative, introducing a limited edition gift box made from yarn created from recycled marine plastic. Twenty percent of the profits were donated to support efforts aimed at preserving the Mediterranean octopus and its ecosystem. Miomojo also extends its support to organizations such as Four Paws, Save the Dogs, Animal Equality, Capra Libera Tutti, and PETA.

People and Social Justice

Throughout the previous year, Miomojo contributed over 2,000 products to Oxfam, generating more than €112,000 to support initiatives providing clean water access for over 11,000 individuals in Yemen, in addition to education, health, and agriculture programs for underserved communities.

In collaboration with the Italian Down Syndrome Association (AIPD), Miomojo has embarked on a journey of inclusion, welcoming new team member Giulia. They also shared their vision at universities like Bocconi, IULM, Bicocca, and Cattolica, aiming to inspire the next generation.

Collaborations

Last year, Miomojo ventured into three collaboration areas beyond fashion: creating a sports capsule with olive-based materials in partnership with the football club Udinese Calcio, a travel bag from rice-based materials with Porsche Bergamo, and gifting ideas aimed at hotels and wineries.

They also partnered with Humana People to People Italy, a non-profit organization focused on transforming second-hand clothing into sustainable and social value, ensuring that older accessory collections find new homes in Humana stores.

Future Plans for Miomojo

This year marks Miomojo’s debut at the Emmy Awards, in association with PETA USA.

The upcoming Miomojo Foundation is designed to serve as a hub where education, innovation, and care converge; showcasing various animal-free materials while also dedicating efforts to rescue animals. It aims to be a sustainable center for schools and universities to explore.

Founded in 2014 by Pievani in Bergamo, Miomojo is committed to redefining business paradigms where profit and positive impact are deeply intertwined.
