This appointment was revealed on World Mental Health Day, where Deepika discussed her role with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, focusing on raising awareness and enhancing access to mental health resources across India. Expressing her gratitude on Instagram, she stated, “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare’s first-ever Mental Health Ambassador.”

Her husband, Ranveer Singh, showed his support by sharing the announcement with a heartfelt message: “So incredibly proud.”

The Internet’s Reaction: Mixed Feelings

While the initiative appears commendable, social media feedback has been critical. Many users argued that an individual with a medical or psychological background would have been a more suitable choice for this crucial role.

Numerous comments emerged quickly on Instagram. One user remarked, “Please do not trivialize mental health with such superficial gestures.” Another suggested, “We need qualified professionals, not just familiar faces.” Commenters conveyed frustration, asking, “Couldn’t a qualified doctor have been appointed?”

Support for Deepika’s Appointment

Amid the criticism, some defended Deepika, pointing out that she has been vocal about her own mental health issues. Through her Live Love Laugh Foundation, established in 2015, she has worked to destigmatize discussions around depression and therapy, addressing topics once considered taboo. While some view this appointment as symbolic, others argue that her visibility could bridge gaps left by traditional awareness campaigns.
