Deepika Padukone Discusses Gender Bias and Mental Health in Cinema

On World Mental Health Day, Deepika Padukone Highlights ‘Brutal’ Gender Bias and Disorganisation in Film Industry
Deepika Padukone opens up about the challenges women face in Bollywood.
To kick off essential discussions around mental health, Deepika Padukone delivered a candid interview just before World Mental Health Day. This isn’t her first attempt to spotlight mental well-being; however, her comments come amidst significant internet chatter after her recent exit from two major projects.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Deepika emphasized the urgent need for better organization within the film industry, particularly in addressing gender bias regarding pay and working conditions.
She stated, “I strive to bring about workplace change in the Indian film industry. It is brutal, and many operate with a ‘chalta hai’ attitude, believing that if a system has functioned for so long, it shouldn’t be altered. I constantly seek ways to improve.”
Deepika also addressed her recent claims regarding an eight-hour workday, highlighting the existing gender disparity. “It’s no secret that many male stars have been working eight-hour shifts for years without any scrutiny,” she pointed out, reiterating how women’s contributions, especially those of new mothers, often go unrecognized.
The heart of her message revolves around the disorganization within the industry. “While we call ourselves an industry, we’ve never truly operated as one. Implementing structured systems is essential,” she concluded.
