While Emraan ventures into new territory with this project, Yami embraces a role that challenges her established on-screen image. In conversation with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor (Entertainment and Lifestyle) at HT City, Yami addressed the complexities of portraying a character far removed from her current public perception.

Sonal remarked on the risks involved in taking on such a character, given Yami’s association as a “poster girl for Hindu nationalists.” Yami responded thoughtfully, emphasizing her commitment to creative motivations over external perceptions.

The purpose of being an artist is defeated if the motivation isn’t creative…”

Yami articulated her philosophy regarding role selection, stating, “Any motivation outside of creativity undermines the essence of being an artist. I believe my tenure in this industry should not pivot on controversies or fleeting trends.”

“I’ve been in the industry since 2012, and I remain true to myself. While there may have been films where I strayed from this path, my core identity has not changed.”

“I cannot cater to every thought process…”

Yami further clarified her stance on public perception, expressing, “People often assign images to others. I don’t view this as negative feedback. It’s inevitable to have diverse narratives, but I must focus on my journey.”

“Being part of films that advocate social reform is essential to my work as an artist. I can’t fathom why films with progressive themes are often misconstrued.”

About *Haq* and Yami’s Role

The film *Haq* is rooted in the landmark Shah Bano case, a pivotal moment for Muslim women’s rights in India. In the narrative, Yami portrays a character inspired by Shah Bano Begum, alongside Emraan Hashmi, who plays a significant role in the ensuing courtroom drama.

The real-life case began when Shah Bano, at 62, sought maintenance following her divorce. The Supreme Court’s 1985 ruling ignited nationwide discussions, leading to legislative changes that reshaped India’s social and legal framework.
