Vans Teams Up with Ernest to Launch Innovative Skatable Cardboard Sneakers

## Vans Collaborates on Innovative Cardboard Sneaker
Footwear and apparel company Vans has joined forces with Ernest Packaging Solutions to introduce a groundbreaking product: the world’s first skatable sneaker made entirely from cardboard. This exciting development is part of Ernest’s Cardboard Chaos series, celebrating Vans’ rich skate culture history and commitment to innovation.
## A Legacy of Skate Culture
Since 1966, Vans has been a favorite among skateboarders globally. The brand’s collaboration with skater Tony Alva in 1976 set a new standard, resulting in sneakers that could withstand the intense demands of skateboarding. Alva’s unique style inspired the brand’s famous “Off the Wall” tagline. Fast forward nearly fifty years, and Vans is once again collaborating with Alva and Steve Van Doren to craft the very first skate shoe made from cardboard.
## The Creation Process
Utilizing their innovative cardboard materials, Ernest Packaging created a flexible version of Vans’ iconic checkerboard design for the sneaker’s exterior. This prototype underwent rigorous testing by Alva, Van Doren, and skate legend Christian Hosoi. The cardboard upper successfully faced multiple production hurdles, including heat curing at 275° and high-pressure processing at 20 PSI.
## A Testament to Teamwork
“In collaboration with Steve, we achieved something unique,” said Tim Wilson, President of Ernest Packaging. “Being a California native, I understand how iconic Vans shoes are. Creating one together was a thrilling experience.”
The cardboard sneaker is part of a series of innovative projects that Ernest Packaging has pursued since 2014, including various other cardboard sports equipment like a snowboard and skateboard for Tony Hawk.
## Innovation at Its Best
“It all came together so well. We created a custom pair of cardboard Vans shoes working with Steve Van Doren and professional skateboarders,” noted David Lee, host of the Cardboard Series produced by Signal Productions and Liquid Agency. “It’s an incredible achievement.”
As Vans works on revitalizing its retail presence, this groundbreaking sneaker aligns with their pursuit of creativity and sustainability amid changing market conditions.
