The esteemed Australian singer-songwriter, Stella Donnelly, is back with new music. Today, she unveiled a double A-side single, marking her first release since the 2022 album Flood.

A Fresh Sound with “Baths” and “Standing Ovation”

The tracks “Baths” and “Standing Ovation” were premiered on triple j Drive last night. This release signifies Donnelly’s journey of reclaiming “her voice and creative space,” offering a glimpse into her artistic evolution.

Creating the Melody

Donnelly shared that the melody for “Baths” came to her while she was swimming at Brunswick Baths in Melbourne. “The pool filter created a humming sound, allowing me to build a melody on top of it,” she explained. “This inspiration continued even at home with the bathroom fan running, although I struggled to write lyrics. Eventually, everything came together at the keyboard, reflecting moments from my life.”

New Beginnings with Dot Dash Recordings

This release represents Donnelly’s first since joining Dot Dash Recordings / Remote Control Records. She expressed, “It felt like the right moment for a creative reset. I couldn’t imagine a better fit for these songs than Dot Dash. I’m thankful to have a team that truly believes in my music and grants me the freedom to explore this next chapter.”

Looking Back at Her Journey

It has been three years since Stella Donnelly released her acclaimed debut album, Beware of the Dogs. The time away has only enhanced her unique sound and introspective songwriting. Critics note that while her jangling indie-pop style remains intact, she has also introduced intriguing new elements to her music.
