We Can Save The World!!! Premieres at NYAFF
Singapore’s feature film We Can Save The World!!! is all set for its world premiere on July 17 at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF). This sci-fi comedy has made its way into the festival’s Southeast Asian Frontiers section, featuring among a curated selection of ten films.
A Landmark for Singaporean Cinema
Directed by Cheng Chai Hong, We Can Save The World!!! holds the distinction of being the only fully independent Singaporean feature in this year’s extensive lineup of over 100 films. Notably, Cheng is also the sole Singaporean director showcasing their work at this festival.
Plot and Cast
The film stars Noah Yap, known for his role in Ah Boys To Men, as Ryan, a disenchanted government employee. He encounters Teoh Jun Vinh (Peng), a homeless man asserting he’s an alien stranded on Earth. Together, they embark on a quirky adventure across Singapore, dodging both a doomsday cult and government agents while forming unexpected alliances.

A Personal Touch
The film features a talented cast including Fauzi Azzhar, Xuan Ong, Leslie Sim, and Daisy Irani. This marks Cheng’s first feature film, following his web series Average Guys and Neighbourhood Watch Task Force. In a recent press release, he shared that the movie serves as a love letter to Singapore and to those feeling stuck in life.
The Filmmaking Journey
Cheng expressed, “As young filmmakers in Singapore, we’re often given a healthy dose of pessimism,” emphasizing that they decided to create the film despite the challenges. He hopes that Singaporeans will see reflections of their own lives in the film, experiencing laughter, tears, and a reminder of the beauty in their messy realities.
NYAFF: A Stage for Asian Cinema
Now in its 24th edition, NYAFF remains North America’s premier venue for showcasing Asian cinema. Following its premiere in New York, We Can Save The World!!! will return to Singapore for its gala premiere on July 25, with public screenings starting August 1 at The Projector.
