Shah Bano’s Family Claims Privacy Violation; Seeks Court Action Against Film Release
Shah Bano’s Family Alleges Privacy Breach in *Haq*
Legal Controversy Surrounds Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s *Haq*
Days before its theatrical release, the film *Haq* featuring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam has encountered serious legal challenges. Shah Bano’s family claims that the filmmakers did not obtain their consent, alleging a breach of privacy as the film portrays her life story.
Shah Bano’s Daughter Files Petition
The Legal proceedings were initiated by Siddiqua Begum, Shah Bano’s daughter, who filed a petition in the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking to halt *Haq’s* release, scheduled for November 7.
According to her lawyer, Tauseef Warsi, the filmmakers failed to seek permission to use Shah Bano’s name or life story. “This film is based on the landmark Shah Bano Begum case. It’s essential to obtain someone’s consent before using their personal life, as it pertains to the right to privacy,” he stated.
Concerns Over Distorted Facts
Jubair Ahmad Khan, Shah Bano’s grandson, expressed his concerns about the film being made without the family’s agreement. “Upon seeing the teaser, we learned about the movie. Numerous facts are distorted. This is our private matter, not to be turned into entertainment without consent,” he said.
Conversely, the filmmakers maintain that creative liberties were taken for dramatic purposes. “The disclaimer clearly states that this film is inspired by the Supreme Court judgment in favor of Shah Bano and a book titled ‘Bano, Bharat ki Beti.’ It’s a fictional portrayal, and it’s not crucial for everything to be factually accurate,” asserted producer’s lawyer, Ajay Bagadiya.
About *Haq*
*Haq*, directed by Suparn S Verma, centers around the historic 1985 Shah Bano case, a crucial moment in the fight for women’s rights regarding maintenance laws in India. The film showcases the story of Shah Bano, who filed a petition in 1978 for maintenance from her divorced husband, leading to a landmark Supreme Court decision. The film stars Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, along with Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady.
What are your thoughts on the family’s legal actions against *Haq*? Do you believe filmmakers should seek permission before depicting real-life figures?
