Sam Smith Soars with New Single 'To Be Free' – A Bright Musical Journey

## Sam Smith’s Transformation and New Single Release

Five years ago, Sam Smith experienced a significant transformation in their life. This period coincided with the recording of their fourth studio album, *Gloria*, which marked a broader exploration of their creative vision and a journey toward self-liberation. Central to this transformation was a poignant ballad titled “To Be Free,” which Smith initially decided not to include on the album.

Smith expressed, “It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself.” The track, which features the TwoCity Chorus, a 22-member choir led by Ant Clemons and Brandon Pain, encapsulates a unique recording experience. Smith described the process as a singular vocal and guitar performance, capturing a pure moment of music and expression with friend Simon Aldred.

### The Heartfelt Journey

Over the past five years, Smith and Aldred gradually crafted additional music that resonated with the essence of “To Be Free.” Reflecting on the song’s significance, Smith stated, “I’ve continued to turn to this song in happy moments, sad moments, lonely moments, and angry moments. It’s become my sister, my family member, and ultimately calms me.” With the timing finally right, Smith is eager to share the song, hoping it will inspire others to find their own sense of freedom.

## A Visual Experience

The release of “To Be Free” is accompanied by a striking music video directed by (La)Horde. In discussing the visual concepts, Smith mentioned, “With this song, the visual of rivers kept coming into my mind and into my heart.” These rivers symbolize significant connections in Smith’s life — from their childhood home in the English countryside to the Thames in London and the Hudson River in New York, where they currently reside. The dancers in the video embody the natural flow of the rivers that have been integral to Smith’s artistic journey.

The video was filmed at Warsaw, one of Brooklyn’s oldest venues. In October, Smith will embrace this location further with a residency titled *To Be Free: New York City*. Scheduled performances begin on October 8 and will continue until October 31. General ticket sales commence on August 1 at 10 a.m. local time, following an earlier presale on July 29.

“I’ve been waiting for the right time to release this song,” Smith shared, “and I couldn’t be happier that it’s finally yours.”
