Raye Returns: A Two-Year Journey and a Heist Behind Her Comeback

Last year, Raye faced unsettling news when her vehicle, containing notebooks filled with her new songs, was stolen. She candidly shared her frustration on Instagram, stating, “So no second album any time soon love you bye.” Fortunately, it seems her much-anticipated album is back on track. The talented British singer-songwriter is now teasing it with a vibrant new single, “Where Is My Husband!”
Musical Style and Performance
“Where Is My Husband!” is an energetic mix that fuses elements of R&B, featuring bold horns and a fresh hip-hop-inspired rhythm that showcases Raye’s distinctive phrasing. The track made a remarkable debut at this summer’s Glastonbury festival, highlighting her dynamic performance. The studio version, produced alongside her long-time collaborator Mike Sabath, exudes confidence and energy. The intro drum roll signals that this might be one of her most audacious releases yet. Raye’s lyrics pack a punch: “Wait til I get my hands on him/I’ma tell him off too/For how long he kept me waiting.” Check out the song and its accompanying video below.
Raye’s Musical Journey
The delays surrounding Raye’s second album reflect a history of challenges in her career. Initially gaining attention in England for her distinctive style that harmonizes vintage sounds with modern twists, the artist, originally known as Rachel Keen, rapidly ascended the pop music ladder. She co-wrote tracks for heavyweights like Charli XCX and Beyoncé, even contributing to John Legend and Ellie Goulding’s works.
However, her journey to realizing her own artistic vision was not easy. Raye felt confined by her first record label’s push for a dance-centric sound that didn’t resonate with her true identity. Ultimately, the label shelved her debut album. Embracing independence, she produced the critically acclaimed 21st Century Blues, which showcased her sophisticated blend of R&B, pop, and jazz.
Upcoming Tour
Coinciding with her new album release, Raye is set to embark on a 40-date headlining tour. The journey kicks off in the U.K. and Europe before heading to the States, where she will perform at notable venues like Radio City Music Hall in New York and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Raye’s younger sisters, Absolutely and Amma, will provide direct support throughout the tour.
