In a surprising turn of events, the owners of a popular cafe in New Zealand have admitted that their earlier statement about filmmaker Peter Jackson was untrue. The Chocolate Fish Cafe had initially claimed that Jackson was forcing their closure, triggering considerable backlash.
Peter Jackson, renowned for his work on the **Lord of the Rings** franchise, purchased the historic Submarine Barracks property in Wellington alongside his partner, Fran Walsh, in 2023. Their intention was to restore the site’s aesthetic appeal.
However, the Chocolate Fish Cafe falsely asserted last week that their lease was being terminated by the famous filmmakers. In a statement on Wednesday, the cafe’s owners acknowledged that this claim was inaccurate.
“We sincerely apologize to Sir Peter Jackson and Dame Fran Walsh for wrongly stating they were involved in our tenancy termination,” they expressed. “We were completely mistaken, and it is crucial for us to communicate this.”
Peter Jackson first made waves in Hollywood with his 1995 film *Heavenly Creatures*, which received an Academy Award nomination. He then directed the *Lord of the Rings* trilogy (2001-2003), which grossed approximately $3 billion globally and earned 17 Oscars.
Following this success, he adapted *King Kong*, before returning to J.R.R. Tolkien’s works with *The Hobbit* trilogy (2012-2014), which also amassed just under $3 billion in box office revenue.
