Malaika’s Insights on Dance Numbers

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Malaika discussed the shifting landscape of dance numbers in films. She remarked, “In the past, they were mostly about glamour and spectacle, often detached from a woman’s individuality.” Today, she believes that filmmakers are more thoughtful, intertwining these songs within narratives that give stronger context to characters.

She further expressed that the focus has shifted from being provocative to emphasizing performance. “I see this as an evolution where women can own their space,” she said.

Malaika also addressed the association of item songs with the male gaze. “Yes, item songs have often been linked to the male gaze, but I have always viewed them differently. For me, dance is about expressing confidence,” she explained. “As long as I feel comfortable and in control, that’s what matters most.”

Celebrating a Remarkable Journey

Malaika is back on screen with her latest special dance number, “Poison Baby,” featured in the film Thamma, alongside Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. She stated that performing this song was about celebrating her journey and highlighting that passion and relevance can exist at any stage of life. “Age doesn’t determine your capacity to perform or inspire,” she emphasized.
