Jonas Brothers Share Why Their Breakup Was Necessary: ‘We Faced Tough Challenges’

In just a few weeks, the Jonas Brothers will embark on their extensive Greetings from Your Hometown tour, celebrating two decades as a band. Since their reunion for Happiness Begins in 2019, following a six-year hiatus due to creative differences—primarily sparked by Nick’s desire to pursue a solo career—the trio has remained active. Now, reflecting on that challenging period, they recognize the silver linings in their journey as both bandmates and brothers.
Communicating Through Challenges
“In reflection, I can definitely see how I could have more lovingly communicated something that needed to be said,” Nick shared on an upcoming episode of Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals. He emphasized the importance of communication style, stating, “It’s often how we say things that matters more than what we’re saying.” Nick acknowledged that they eventually understood that the dynamics within their group had run their course, yet he struggled to express it maturely at the time.
Growth from the Past
Joe, who started his own project, DNCE, in 2015, remembered the difficulties they faced back then: “We were having such a difficult time just being real with each other.” The Jonas Brothers were in the midst of promoting their fifth album when they unexpectedly announced their breakup in October 2013, just two days before a planned tour. Joe added, “It needed to happen,” acknowledging the necessity for that break in their journey. More than a decade later, he feels they can communicate much more effectively now, without fear of tough conversations.
Stronger Bonds
Kevin pointed out that while they aren’t always able to speak completely freely, they have made significant progress. “When there’s a true need, I think we always band together,” he remarked. “I think we’re brothers first. That’s a bit cliché, but it’s true.” He expressed confidence that in times of real need, he could quickly rely on his brothers.
