James Johnston Embraces Alan Jackson's Influence in New Track 'I Oughta Know Better'

Australian country sensation James Johnston has released his latest single, “I Oughta Know Better.” This lively track pays homage to the classic sounds of the ’90s, reminiscent of Alan Jackson, while adding a contemporary flair.

The new song is a preview of his upcoming second album, Where You’ll Find Me, set to launch on October 24th through Warner Music Australia.

About the New Track

Johnston describes the song as a blend of his past and present. “Being a father to two boys means fewer late nights with friends,” he shares. “But every now and then, whether with old mates or enjoying a quiet night with my wife, it usually starts with ‘let’s just have one,’ and often ends with a morning headache. I wanted to create a drinking song that’s more about those relatable moments than wild nights at clubs.”

A New Era for Johnston

This release marks a significant evolution for Johnston as he enters what he calls his “international era.” The single combines catchy, festival-ready melodies with heartfelt lyrics, setting the stage for his music to reach audiences outside of Australia. His journey has already taken him from viral TikTok fame to performing with U.S. stars, including Kip Moore.

Upcoming Tour and Album Support

The album launch will be complemented by an extensive tour across city theaters and regional venues, hitting places like Brisbane, Mareeba, Perth, Hobart, Darwin, and Canberra.

This year has been incredibly fruitful for Johnston, who recently won the Countrytown Awards for Entertainer of the Year and Male Artist of the Year. He also returned to South Africa to collect the Song of the Year award for his collaboration “Country Is For Me” with Appel. His debut album, Raised Like That, achieved platinum status, amassing over 134 million streams and holding the record for the longest-running No. 1 on the ARIA Australian Country Albums Chart.
