Producers Guild of India Comments

Shibasish Sarkar noted that Trump’s tariff could be an attempt by the U.S. government to protect local jobs and investments in the film industry. He explained that the directive seems to focus primarily on Hollywood productions currently taking place overseas.

In a statement, Sarkar remarked, “Trump’s announcement appears to target Hollywood productions that have relocated to places like Canada, Spain, and South Korea. We await further details to interpret the full implications.”

He also mentioned that foreign-language films being released in the U.S. might not face significant issues due to these tariffs. Sarkar emphasized the goal seems to be more about job preservation in the U.S. film sector.

Details of the Tariff Announcement

On a recent Monday, Trump announced the imposition of a 100% tariff on all films made outside the nation, asserting that the U.S. film industry had been undermined by international competition.

In a post on Truth Social, he stated, “Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries.” He further elaborated that this initiative aims to resolve longstanding issues in the industry.

Trump concluded his announcement with a rallying call to restore America’s greatness in cinema: “Therefore, in order to solve this long-time, never-ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
