Hema Malini was one of the first to spot the unique charm of Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood. While his official debut was in Deewana (1992), it was Hema who gave him his significant break by casting him in Dil Aashna Hai the very same year.

"I can’t believe he is turning 60; I thought he was in his 40s," she shared. "From the moment I saw him in Fauji, I knew he was different. He was perfect for the role I was casting—a rich, aristocratic man’s son. Smart and articulate, he was a joy to work with." Hema reminisces about the moment she contacted him, noting how he couldn’t contain his excitement when he realized she was on the line.

Dharmendra’s Impressions of a Young Shah Rukh

It wasn’t just Hema who saw potential in Khan; her husband, veteran actor Dharmendra, was equally impressed. She recalls, "When Dharmendra saw him, he exclaimed, ‘You must take this boy!’ He even took the time to write some of his dialogues."

Despite his rough look back then, Shah Rukh had a distinct charisma that drew attention. Hema adds, "He may have had unconventional looks and was shorter than most heroes, but he possessed a unique charm." Over the years, Khan proved himself not only as a romantic lead but also adept in playing complex villainous roles.

Today, she expresses pride in the iconic figure he has become in Bollywood.
