Georgia Maq has shared a second preview of her upcoming EP, God’s Favourite, through her latest single, “Slightly Below the Middle.”
This song, co-produced with Daniel Fox, weaves a rich tapestry of mythology and personal history, prompting reflections on morality and identity from her childhood experiences.
Exploring Conversations with the Divine
Maq describes the track as an introspective dialogue with the entities embodying the Devil and God. “This song is basically a conversation between me and whoever the boss of the Devil and God is,” she reveals.
A Personal Touch on a Familiar Melody
Where the original track delivers a fiery tale of a fiddle duel, Maq transforms that narrative into a more reflective and personal exploration. As she expresses: “The devil plays a fiddle / On a lawn chair in the yard / I asked him why he’s over / He said ‘well, since your father’s been gone / I went down to Georgia / Now I know it won’t be long / Until you’re singing / I know, I listen.’”
Diving into Complex Emotions
With “Slightly Below the Middle,” Maq navigates intricate emotional landscapes, building on themes first introduced in her earlier single, “Pay Per View.” This track grapples with choices, perceptions, and atonement, delving into purity and deviance through a deeply personal lens. Accompanied by a textured acoustic backdrop, Maq confidently traverses both shadow and light.
A Journey of Artistic Transformation
The EP embodies Maq’s recent relocation to Los Angeles and the unique sense of freedom that comes with becoming an “unknown” again. In God’s Favourite, she adopts a softer sonic style, influenced by her surroundings and rooted in Americana and folk traditions.
“I want to acknowledge that I stopped singing in an Australian accent,” she mentions. “Honestly, it was never really natural for me in the first place. I started singing when I was a kid in an American accent because I was brought up on country and bluegrass music (dad) and Cold Chisel (mum). I feel like I’ve come back to that. I think maybe this EP is me connecting to my mum as well; it was unintentional, but I think the songs are letters I’m sending to her back home.”
