EJAE Discusses K-Pop Demon Hunters’ Lead Single “Golden”: Insights from Rumi

Exclusive | EJAE on K-Pop Demon Hunters lead single Golden: ‘I found deep with Rumi’
EJAE admits that the experience still feels surreal.
“I am done hiding, now I am shining,” a line from Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters lead single *Golden*, reflects EJAE’s personal journey of growth, catapulting her into the limelight.
The song, part of the original movie soundtrack, is making waves on the charts. EJAE not only shines as the vocalist but also showcases her songwriting talents with tracks like “Your Idol” and “How It’s Done.”
In an exclusive chat, EJAE reflected: “It’s surreal; I never anticipated any of this, nor did anyone involved in the film. The love we’ve received is unreal. Everything happens in due time,” she mused.
Portraying Rumi, the lead of the fictional pop group HUNTR/X, EJAE connects deeply with the character’s complex identity, embodying both demon and human aspects. She reveals that while crafting *Golden*, she was also in search of hope.
“Rumi expresses her inner turmoil through her singing, marking her sadness and vulnerabilities. I aimed to portray that same vulnerability along with her strength. My own experiences have mirrored this desire to find the light and see my efforts rewarded,” EJAE explains.
At 31, EJAE’s path has been paved with sheer determination. Beginning as a trainee at SM Entertainment, she faced numerous rejections within the competitive K-pop industry, which made her journey all the more challenging.
“The quest for perfection can be deadly. I battled insecurities and feelings of inadequacy when I didn’t make the cut. It’s taken time to develop self-compassion. The film’s message about discovering one’s path resonated with me,” she reflects.
Now a successful songwriter, she has penned hits for groups like Red Velvet, Twice, and Aespa, earning her the title “Benny Blanco of K-pop.”
“He’s an iconic figure, and I still have so much to learn. My goal is to keep growing as a songwriter while being a perpetual student,” she admits modestly.
*Golden’s* success marks a pivotal shift in her career. “People are beginning to recognize me as an artist. I’ve been asked about my upcoming album, and I’m finally tapping into that part of myself—a new single is on the horizon,” she reveals.
Shortly after our conversation, EJAE announced that her new track *Another World* will release on October 24th.
As buzz circulates regarding *Golden* possibly being Oscar-nominated, she playfully remarked, “That would be astonishing; I’d be in shock!” as she hums the catchy phrase, “gonna be, gonna be golden.”
