Doja Cat’s ‘Vie’: A Fresh Pop Revival with an ’80s Flair
Music Review: Doja Cat brings back the ’80s vibes with ‘Vie’
Doja Cat has been teasing fans about her latest album, hinting at a strong ’80s influence through her extravagant outfits and retro dance moves. Released recently, her track “Vie” encapsulates this vibrant energy.
Known for standout hits like “Say So” and “Kiss Me More,” Doja Cat dives back into pop for her fifth studio album. This release celebrates iconic sounds from the past while incorporating her signature rap verses.
The opening tracks, “Cards” and “Jealous Type,” feature catchy synths and upbeat snares. Lyrically, Doja Cat explores love’s uncertainties, singing, “Maybe I’ll fall in love baby / Maybe we’ll win some hearts / Gotta just play your cards.”
Among the album’s gems is “AAAHH MEN!,” which showcases her vocal versatility from whispers to intense shouts. This track delves into the highs and lows of romantic relationships.
In terms of fun, tracks like “Silly! Fun!” shine, where she joyfully expresses, “You’re my person / This my first time I’m in love.”
The influence of the ’80s resonates throughout “Vie,” especially in “All Mine,” which features falsettos and an R&B style reminiscent of Prince. The album closes with “Come Back,” evoking feelings akin to a nostalgic John Hughes film scene.
While Doja Cat successfully experiments with these retro sounds, some tracks miss the mark due to musical repetitiveness—a hallmark of ’80s music. With 15 tracks in total, not all songs capture the audience’s interest. For instance, “Couples Therapy” and “Acts of Service” offer less engagement compared to the album’s highlights.
Overall, “Vie” is a triumph of ’80s-inspired experimentation, balancing catchy choruses with flavorful rap elements.
Doja Cat’s “Vie”
Rating: Three and a half stars out of five.
Recommended Track: “AAAHH MEN!”
Skip Track: “Couples Therapy”
For fans of: Nostalgic moments and ’80s films like “The Karate Kid.”
What are your thoughts on Doja Cat’s retro-inspired sound in “Vie”?
