Divya Dutta’s Diwali Secrets: Festival Shopping and Making Halwa
Actor Divya Dutta on going incognito for Diwali shopping and the cherished festival traditions she follows.
For actor Divya Dutta, the festival of lights is an essential “tonic.” She describes it as a recharge, stating, “yahan se apni urja lekar kaam pe jaate hain!”
“It’s a time to unwind and celebrate with family and friends. It’s all about doling out joy and pampering myself – from wearing nice outfits to decorating the house. There’s something magical about this festival; I can’t quite explain it!”

For Divya, a crucial Diwali ritual is shopping. “I get quite excited about festive shopping! I wear a cap, mask, and large sunglasses to blend in at the busiest marketplace,” she shares. “Even known personalities should embrace simple joys like this. I keep my interactions minimal to avoid being recognized; my brother and I have a fun shopping experience together!”
At home, she carries on the tradition of making halwa, a recipe she inherited from her mother. “Suji ka halwa is a must, and I make it with a lot of love. Even my cook agrees that no one makes halwa like I do!” Divya adds that she enjoys decorating the ‘hatti’ (earthen hut) for puja, a gesture believed to invite prosperity. She honors her mother’s traditions with great care.
One of her favorite festive spots is the home of actor Shabana Azmi, along with gatherings featuring close friends, including actors and directors. “I do miss the grand Diwali parties at Amitabh Bachchan’s home,” she reminisces.
While she is a “die-hard sari person,” Divya opts for a lehnga during the celebrations.
Gladly, she manages to keep her schedule free for Diwali festivities. “Even with the busy shooting schedules, I’ve always been home for the festival, even reaching just in time last year!”
She concludes with a message to enjoy the celebrations with lights while avoiding firecrackers, emphasizing the importance of caring for the environment and our pets.
