Parmeet Sethi, known for his portrayal of Kuljeet in the iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), opened up about the challenges he faced in landing this role. He revealed that it wasn’t simply handed to him; rather, he had to fight for it fiercely.

Parmeet Sethi Discusses His Journey to DDLJ

Parmeet shared that initially, he was not offered the role, stating, “Mujhe ladna pada iss role ke liye” (I had to fight for this role). His heart sank when he read in the newspaper that another actor was cast for the part.

He explained, “I was completely devastated. Aditya told me that my vibes were positive, but he doubted that I would suit a negative role.” This realization haunted him, as he believed this role was meant for him.

How Parmeet Won Over Aditya Chopra

Determined to get the role, Parmeet approached Aditya for a screen test. He was invited to Aditya’s office, where he was given key scenes from the film. Parmeet took a bold step by slightly altering the lines to incorporate Punjabi flavor, with help from Archana.

He recollected the nervousness he felt during the tests, saying, “I was anxiously waiting to exhale.” After a long pause during the audition, Aditya finally said, “You are my Kuljeet.” Overjoyed, Parmeet leaped in excitement and hugged him.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has become a beloved classic, with its storyline revolving around Simran’s father choosing Kuljeet as her partner. As this film approaches its 30th anniversary on October 20, it’s worth remembering its impact on Bollywood.
