Amitabh Bachchan’s Concerns About Jumma Chumma’s Hook Step: Jaya’s Response
Choreographer Chinni Prakash shares insights into Amitabh Bachchan’s concerns over Jumma Chumma’s hook step, contrasting it with Jaya Bachchan’s supportive reaction.
Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic song “Jumma Chumma De De” from the 1991 film *Hum* is celebrated even today. However, the dance sequence was shrouded in uncertainty during its creation. Choreographer Chinni Prakash recounted that Bachchan himself was concerned that the hook step could appear vulgar. In contrast, his wife Jaya Bachchan had a remarkably different perspective.
Amitabh Bachchan’s Concerns About Jumma Chumma Hookstep
In a recent discussion with *Friday Talkies*, Prakash revealed behind-the-scenes stories from the hit song. He noted that both Bachchan and the song’s team feared that the hook step could appear inappropriate, potentially causing backlash.
“I received a call from my assistant late at night, stating that they were too scared to show the hook step to Amitabh,” Prakash shared. “They were convinced it wouldn’t go over well.” Eventually, Prakash performed the complete routine for Bachchan, who felt he needed three months of practice to master it. Despite his reservations about the hook step, he agreed to give it a try.
Jaya Bachchan’s Supportive Reaction
Prakash also mentioned that the film’s director, Mukul Anand, was initially reluctant to keep the hook step in the choreography. However, he ultimately decided to proceed with it. During the film’s screening, there was an intense silence during the song, followed by enthusiastic cheers from the audience.
“Everyone was captivated during the six-minute performance. When the song concluded, the theatre erupted in applause,” Prakash recalled. He added that Jaya Bachchan was genuinely impressed, telling him, ‘It looks superb!’
The song “Jumma Chumma De De” featured actress Kimi Katkar and was a massive hit, sung by Kavitta Krishnamurthy and Sudesh Bhonsle, with music composed by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal. Choreographed by Prakash, the film *Hum* became a blockbuster and was the second-highest-grossing Indian film that year.
