Taeil, Ex-NCT Member, Faces Sentencing for Rape Conviction

## Taeil’s Legal Troubles
Taeil, a former member of the K-pop group NCT and its sub-units NCT U and NCT 127, has been convicted of rape in Seoul, South Korea. The 31-year-old singer has received a prison sentence of three-and-a-half years for sexually assaulting an inebriated tourist in June 2024, alongside two other individuals.
## Background of the Case
Born Moon Tae-il, he was ousted from the group in August 2024 following the emergence of allegations surrounding sexual misconduct. SM Entertainment acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, “We have recently confirmed that Taeil has been implicated in a criminal case related to sexual crimes.” The company added that they deemed it necessary for him to cease participation in group activities.
### Details of the Incident
Taeil was reported to be cooperating with the police investigation and expressed regret for the controversy generated by his actions. According to media outlets, investigations indicated that Taeil and his accomplices met their victim at a bar in Seoul. The woman reportedly became heavily intoxicated and later accompanied them to one of their residences, where she was assaulted while unconscious. Under South Korean law, this is categorized as a “quasi rape.” All three men pleaded guilty as of June.
## Sentencing and Consequences
Each of the three men received the same sentence and has already begun serving time. Prosecutors initially sought a seven-year sentence; however, the presiding judge reduced this to half, citing their status as first-time offenders. On top of their prison time, they are mandated to complete 40 hours in a sexual violence treatment program.
## Impact on NCT
Since Taeil’s departure, NCT has not released any new music, marking a significant change for the popular group.
