Veteran K-pop artist T.O.P, formerly of BIGBANG, appears to be taking definitive steps to revive his music career, which has been on hold for some time. An industry report from July 23 indicates that he is in talks regarding a potential solo comeback, particularly eyeing an exclusive contract with the well-known entertainment company CJ ENM.
This follows T.O.P’s public revelation last month during an interview, where he expressed his desire to launch new solo music by the latter half of 2025. Currently, he operates independently without any agency representation. A new arrangement could signify a transformative phase in his individual journey post-BIGBANG.
According to an unnamed source speaking to The Korea Herald, “T.O.P is in negotiations with CJ ENM for a solo contract, which includes plans for a new album expected to be released this year.” This suggests that preparations for a new album are already underway.
CJ ENM Responds to Speculation
In response to the ongoing rumors, CJ ENM promptly issued a statement debunking any formal discussions regarding a contract with T.O.P. A CJ ENM representative clarified, “No talks about an exclusive contract or a comeback with T.O.P have occurred,” addressing the speculation head-on.
CJ ENM is a major entity in the South Korean entertainment sphere, managing a diverse lineup of artists through its subsidiaries, including WakeOne and Stone Music Entertainment. However, it remains uncertain if any sub-labels will be involved should talks with T.O.P move forward.
T.O.P’s Past and Future Endeavors
T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung Hyun, parted ways with YG Entertainment in February 2022, concluding a 16-year partnership that catapulted BIGBANG to K-pop success. In May 2023, he officially announced his departure from the group.
Since stepping back from group activities, T.O.P has kept a relatively low profile, appearing occasionally in acting roles. His last solo release, the experimental single “Doom Dada,” dates back to November 2013, making any new project monumental as it would be his first solo effort in over a decade.
Despite the waiting period, fans remain enthusiastic about his potential comeback. Many are eager to see him reestablish his presence in the dynamic K-pop landscape.
T.O.P’s Acting Role in Squid Game
While his music career has been on hold, T.O.P recently gained attention for returning to acting, having been cast in Netflix’s acclaimed series “Squid Game” for Seasons 2 and 3. He plays Thanos, a character with a past as a rapper, marking his first significant on-screen role in several years, which garnered mixed reviews due to his previous controversies.
This move signals a bold reintroduction for T.O.P, who had maintained a low profile since a legal controversy in 2017 that impacted his career. Although discussions with CJ ENM remain unofficial and unverified, there is a growing sentiment that exciting developments may soon unfold.
