Sydney Sweeney Brings Christy Martin's Inspiring Story to Film

Actress Sydney Sweeney takes on the role of former professional boxer Christy Martin in the biopic “Christy,” which delves into Martin’s life both in and out of the boxing ring.

Directed and co-written by David Michod, the film spans two decades of Martin’s journey, showcasing how she stumbled into boxing and, through her natural talent, became one of the most accomplished female boxers in the 1990s.

The narrative also highlights her complex relationship with her coach-turned-husband, Jim Martin, portrayed by Ben Foster, whose influence significantly impacted her career and personal life with difficult outcomes.

Beyond boxing, Martin established Christy’s Champs, a non-profit organization aimed at supporting victims of domestic abuse. During the film’s premiere at the London Film Festival on October 17, Sweeney acknowledged the weight of telling Martin’s story.

“It’s definitely a heavy weight to bear,” Sweeney remarked. “I recognize the importance of her narrative and its significance to many; she’s a tremendous advocate who inspires me to be one as well.”

Now 57, Martin was known for her aggressive fighting style and extraordinary punches, becoming the first woman to sign with renowned boxing promoter Don King. She remained active in the boxing scene from 1989 until 2012.

Martin was closely involved in the film’s production, regularly visiting the set throughout filming.

Known for her roles in “Euphoria” and “Anyone But You,” Sweeney dedicated around three months to prepare for her portrayal, working closely with a boxing coach, a weight trainer, and a nutritionist.

“I gained 35 pounds (about 16 kg), and the transformation was quite intense. I felt incredibly strong,” she shared, noting that the fight scenes were remarkably authentic. “I even got a concussion and might have broken someone else’s nose.”

The film not only celebrates Martin’s significant achievements in boxing but also addresses serious themes like domestic violence and sexual identity.

Co-writer Mirrah Foulkes emphasized, “The aim was to craft a film encompassing various themes, not just boxing.” Director Michod further noted, “I recognized there was a broader story about coercive-control dynamics, particularly in the relationship depicted in the film.”

“Christy” is set to begin its global theatrical release on November 7.
