When Shah Rukh Khan Was ‘Very Happy’ Being a TV Star After Fauji; His Mom Wanted Him to Be a Movie Star
Renuka Shahane recalls Shah Rukh’s contentment with his early television success on his 60th birthday.
Shah Rukh Khan is celebrated as a film icon today, but there was a period in the late 1980s when he captivated audiences on television. It wasn’t until the early 90s that he made his move into films, launching the illustrious career we recognize today. In a talk with SCREEN, his co-star Renuka Shahane shared insights into how content he was during his TV days, despite his mother, Lateef Fatima, aspiring for him to enter the film industry.

Renuka Shahane on SRK’s Contentment as a TV Star
Renuka and Shah Rukh collaborated in the 1989 TV series Circus, where he portrayed Shekharan Rai and she played Maria. Recalling his rise to fame through Fauji, she noted, “The frenzy surrounding him during the filming of Circus was astonishing. At that point, he was very content doing television and wasn’t even considering a move to films.”
Renuka also expressed that while others encouraged him to pursue film stardom, Shah Rukh felt at home in theatre and television. “Shah Rukh would express that these mediums were his true space. However, his mother had hopes for him to grace the silver screen. Look where he is now; what a remarkable film star he has become,” she remarked.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Journey from TV to Films
Initially involved in theatre, Shah Rukh landed his first lead role in the 1988 show Dil Dariya. However, production delays meant his debut was actually in Fauji, a series about army cadets that catapulted him to fame. Following that, he participated in various TV series like Circus, Idiot, Umeed, and Wagle Ki Duniya.
Despite his burgeoning fame, acting wasn’t his initial aspiration. It took the passing of his mother in 1990 for him to shift his focus and relocate to Mumbai, where he began his cinematic journey. He made his film debut in 1992 with Deewana, setting the stage for an unprecedented career.
After the successes of 2023’s Pathaan and Jawan, Shah Rukh is set to appear in Siddharth Anand’s King, scheduled for release in 2026.
