Rush Celebrates Kiss’ Ace Frehley: A Tribute to an Authentic Rock Star
The members of Rush are reminiscing about their experiences touring as an opening act for Kiss back in the 1970s. Following the recent passing of Ace Frehley on October 16, the band paid tribute to the iconic guitarist, describing him as an “undeniable character.”
“We were completely shocked and saddened to hear about Ace Frehley’s untimely death,” the band expressed on Instagram. “In 1974, while performing as the opening act for KISS, Alex, Neil, and I had countless nights in his hotel room after shows, creating wonderful memories and trying to coax his unique laugh.”
They continued, “He embodied the essence of a rock star. Rest in peace, Ace … thank you for embracing us newcomers in the rock and roll scene.”
Memorable Moments from the Tour
Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have previously shared exciting stories from their time touring with Kiss, particularly Frehley, in a documentary titled Time Stand Still. Released in 2016, the film highlights their amusing escapades on the road. Lifeson humorously recalls dressing up as “The Bag,” donning a paper bag on his head and amusing his bandmates—and Frehley—in the process.

“Gene was quite upset with ‘The Bag,’” Lifeson recounted in the documentary. “It brought Ace great joy.”
“Gene wasn’t on the same wavelength as we were,” Lee noted. “His reality differed from ours while we indulged in drinks and other activities in Ace’s room.”
