Richard Gere joins Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday celebrations in Dharamshala

Festivities are in full swing in Dharamshala and nearby Kangra area for the Dalai Lama’s milestone birthday.

Hollywood icon Richard Gere attended the festivities in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, as part of the lead-up to the 90th birthday celebration of the 14th Dalai Lama.

Details on the Celebrations in Dharamshala

The Dalai Lama’s birthday is officially observed on July 6 according to the Gregorian calendar. However, activities began on June 30, in line with the Tibetan calendar. This significant event has drawn spiritual leaders, dignitaries, and well-wishers from around the globe.

Gere is among the notable attendees in Dharamshala, underscoring the event’s global significance.

Gere Reflects on Personal Connections

During his visit to the Nechung Monastery, Gere expressed that “We’re here to celebrate His Holiness’s 90th birthday, his good health, his strength and compassion.” He shared a personal connection to the monastery, stating, “This monastery is very important to me and my son.” He even mentioned how the Dalai Lama has visited his home in the U.S., which deepened their relationship.

At the Nechung Monastery, a significant event took place where the Nechung Oracle, a protective deity of the Tibetan community, entered a trance to bless leaders of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). Several key figures, including CTA President Penpa Tsering and many Tibetan devotees, were present for this ritual.

President Tsering emphasized the importance of this invocation, noting that the Nechung Oracle provides guidance during challenging times.

On June 30, the Dalai Lama made a public appearance at the Tsuglagkhang temple in Dharamshala, reaffirming his commitment to peace, compassion, and service not only to the Tibetan community but also to the global society.

The event has been a focal point for interfaith leaders, highlighting the Dalai Lama’s influence beyond Buddhism.

Swami Chidanand Saraswati remarked that the Dalai Lama is a “blessing to the world” with a clear message of prioritizing peace over conflict.

Another guest, Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, emphasized his teachings on compassion, arguing that love and truth remain viable even amid hurt. Jain Acharya Lokesh Muni reiterated the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts, calling for unity rather than division.

The celebrations will continue with a three-day international Buddhist conference in Dharamshala from July 2 to 4, gathering senior monks and scholars from various traditions. The event will culminate in a major address by the Dalai Lama, focusing on the future of the Tibetan reincarnation tradition.

Moreover, a special commemorative event is set for July 13 in New Delhi, arranged by the International Buddhist Confederation.
