Raza Murad Reflects on Asrani: A True Master Entertainer
Asrani was my guru, a master entertainer: Raza Murad
Tribute to a Legend
In Mumbai, actor Raza Murad shared heartfelt sentiments about his late co-star Asrani, describing him as not only a mentor but also a phenomenal entertainer. Murad emphasized Asrani’s unique talent in making audiences laugh and feel joy.
Asrani, who passed away recently, was celebrated for his exceptional comedic timing, said Murad in an interview with PTI Videos.
He honored Asrani’s legacy as a complete entertainer whose immense talent and humanity will be remembered in Indian cinema.
“There will never be another actor quite like him,” he remarked.
Remembering a Mentor
Veteran actor Govardhan Asrani breathed his last in Mumbai, reaching the age of 84. Murad expressed his sorrow, recounting how Asrani acted as a guide during his formative years at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.
“He was my guru. At FTII, he conducted classes focusing on diction, voice, movement, and imagination. We studied under him for two years, and later he became my fellow actor,” Murad reminisced.
Collaborative Masterpieces
Murad reminisced about their first film together, “Namak Haraam,” followed by Asrani’s direction in “Dil Hi Toh Hai.” Their partnership continued through various films, showcasing Asrani’s divine gift for bringing laughter.
“He was called to entertain and spread joy,” Murad stated.
Versatility Beyond Comedy
Murad praised Asrani for being more than just a comedian. He highlighted how Asrani effortlessly transitioned between various roles, including an iconic jailer in “Sholay” and serious characters in films like “Guddi” and “Aakrosh.”
He commended Asrani’s substantial contribution to over 350 films and acknowledged his unparalleled comic timing, recalling the memorable line, “Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hain,” from “Sholay” as a prime example of comedic brilliance.
A Reserved Personal Life
Reflecting on Asrani’s modesty, Murad noted, “He was private about his life, never making his residence a studio.” Asrani had expressed a desire for his passing to be a peaceful affair, respecting personal wishes around life and death.
Asrani’s cremation took place at the Santacruz crematorium, attended by close family and friends.
