Pradipta Bhattacharyya’s Nadharer Bhela: India’s Sole Entry at Kolkata Fest

Renowned filmmaker Pradipta Bhattacharyya’s new Bengali movie, Nadharer Bhela (The Slow Man and His Raft), has been selected for the international competition section titled “Innovation in Moving Images” at the upcoming 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). This prestigious event will take place in Kolkata from November 6 to 13.
Overview of Nadharer Bhela
The film previously garnered attention at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) earlier this year. It tells the story of Nadhar, a man perceived as dysfunctional due to his slow movements. He finds himself in a travelling circus, where his condition becomes a form of spectacle. The film meditates on the themes of human nature and the experience of being out of sync with a fast-paced world.
Key Information
This three-hour cinematic piece stands out as the only Indian entry in its category, competing for the prestigious Golden Royal Bengal Tiger award alongside 14 films from various corners of the globe, according to festival officials. Ritwick Chakraborty portrays the role of a circus manager, while Amit Saha takes on the titular role of Nadhar. Notably, the film was shot in Tehatta, the director’s hometown in Nadia district, West Bengal.
Director Pradipta Bhattacharyya stated, “Though pre-production began a year ago, filming took just 13 days. Nadharer Bhela explores the journey of a man striving to keep pace in a rapidly moving society. Those who wish to go at their own speed often find themselves labeled as misfits. The film emphasizes this aspect of society.” He expressed gratitude, stating, “I am thrilled for both local audiences and international delegates at KIFF to witness our work. This selection is a testament to the dedication of our entire team in bringing this vision to life.”
