Musicians Unite in Petition Against Fake AI-Generated Music Uploads
## Petition for Authenticating Music Streams
A petition has been initiated by Paul Bender, a member of Hiatus Kaiyote, urging digital streaming services to adopt a robust authentication process to curb deceptive AI-generated music uploads.
### The Issue Faced by Artists
Bender, who is also part of The Sweet Enoughs, described his frustrating experience in the petition on Change.org. He shared that four songs, unrelated to him and sounding distinctly like AI-generated content, were uploaded to his artist profile on various streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, and YouTube Music.
“The process to get them removed was agonizing, taking over eight weeks and requiring public attention and media coverage,” he noted.
The heart of the problem lies in the fact that anyone can upload music to artist profiles without proper verification. This opens the door for AI-generated tracks to be misattributed to legitimate musicians.
Bender concluded by calling on the music industry, lawmakers, and stakeholders worldwide to take significant steps to protect artists during these tumultuous times.
### A Growing List of Supporters
The petition has garnered signatures from influential names in both Australian and global music scenes. Notable supporters include Genesis Owusu, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Chaka Khan, Jacob Collier, and many others who have raised their voices against the issue.
In an open letter included at the end of the petition, Bender delves deeper into the concerns surrounding the current landscape of digital streaming.
### The Challenge of Current Processes
Bender stated, “The availability of AI tools makes it easier than ever for scams to occur. Currently, artists and labels must deal with fraudulent cases directly with streaming services, which is both tedious and time-consuming.”
He emphasized that the effectiveness of this approach largely depends on the artist’s recognition, leaving smaller independent musicians feeling powerless.
“The increase in illegal uploads is tarnishing both artist reputations and the credibility of streaming platforms, leading to a compromised user experience.”
His letter warns that if left unaddressed, the situation will worsen significantly.
> “We are demanding that digital distributors and streaming platforms institute a functional authentication system to prevent this,” Bender urged.
He further elaborated, “Without these systems, the streaming landscape risks becoming inundated with AI impersonations, which not only impacts artists but also diminishes the quality and relevance of these platforms.”
Bender called for serious measures, stating, “Streaming platforms should face legal repercussions for failing to prevent fraud.”
