Matt Cameron Steps Away from Pearl Jam After Nearly 30 Years as Drummer

Matt Cameron Departs Pearl Jam After Nearly Three Decades
Pearl Jam’s drummer, Matt Cameron, announced his departure from the band on July 7. After almost 30 years of contributing to the iconic rock group, the 62-year-old shared the news through a heartfelt social media post.
“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” Cameron expressed. He extended his gratitude to band members Jeff, Ed, Mike, and Stone, acknowledging the incredible journey filled with camaraderie, artistic growth, and memorable experiences.
While Cameron didn’t provide a specific reason for his exit, his announcement has sparked varied reactions from fans and fellow musicians alike.
A Legacy of Excellence
Pearl Jam’s statement highlighted Cameron’s immense contributions as both a musician and a drummer. “Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer. He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings,” the band expressed. They wished him well in future endeavors but did not mention a potential replacement.
Before joining Pearl Jam, Cameron had a successful stint with Soundgarden for over a decade. Although he wasn’t part of the original lineup, he played a crucial role in stabilizing the band’s rhythm section after several lineup changes. Initially brought in as a temporary replacement for Jack Irons in 1998, he made his studio debut with them on the album Binaural in 2000.
Recently, he wrapped up a yearlong tour supporting the band’s 12th studio album, Dark Matter.
Origins and Musical Journey
Cameron was born and raised in San Diego, eventually moving to Seattle right before the city’s music scene gained global recognition. He began his career in the proto-grunge band Skin Yard before joining Soundgarden. From 2010 to 2017, he skillfully juggled roles in both Pearl Jam and a reunited Soundgarden.
