Lizzo Faces Copyright Lawsuit Over Song Snippet Linked to Sydney Sweeney
GRC Trust’s Legal Action Against Lizzo
GRC Trust has initiated a lawsuit against Lizzo and Atlantic Records, alleging that they have incurred “damages” due to what they claim is an infringement of GRC’s rights. The lawsuit argues that Lizzo and her collaborators have profited from their use of material without permission.
The Controversial Song
The song titled “I’m Goin’ in Till October” was previewed in early August amidst a public relations storm surrounding Sydney Sweeney and her denim campaign with American Eagle. In the snippet, Lizzo mentioned Sweeney with the line, “Bitch, I got good jeans like I’m Sydney,” sparking interest and conversation.
Release of Extended EP
Shortly after the snippet was shared, Lizzo unveiled an extended version of her EP, My Face Still Hurts From Smiling. It featured nine new tracks, but notably, “I’m Goin’ in Till October” was not included.
Allegations of Copyright Infringement
In their legal filing, GRC accuses Lizzo of “copying and exploiting” their copyrighted work. They claim that attempts at negotiation with Lizzo and her record label reached a deadlock, prompting them to take legal action. The court documents specify that the disputed track “incorporates, interpolates, and samples instrumental and vocal elements” of GRC’s material, a point acknowledged by representatives for Lizzo.
Past Legal Issues
This isn’t the first time Lizzo has faced legal scrutiny over her music. In 2019, she dealt with a plagiarism claim related to her popular single “Truth Hurts.” Although she countersued the songwriters who made the claim, that case was eventually dismissed. By 2022, all parties reached a settlement regarding the matter.
