Lawrence Wong's Journey: From Low-Income Rental to Stardom

Recently, actor Lawrence Wong participated in the local charity initiative 60 Lights, One Future, which aims to generate funds for underprivileged children through the Singapore Red Cross.

The actor, who was born in Malaysia, shared that his drive to give back is rooted in his own challenging upbringing. “I didn’t come from a wealthy background. From my student days to becoming an actor, it’s been a journey. None of it came easy,” he expressed in an interview with Shin Min Daily News.

During his childhood, Wong would travel every day from Malaysia to Singapore for school. “Every day, I’d take a bus at 4am to cross the Causeway. I’ve also endured over 10 years as an actor. I wasn’t handed a bunch of resources right away,” he reflected.

“I’ve experienced sadness, joy, hardship, and tough times. So I really understand how challenging it can be for children from low-income families to keep a hopeful outlook on the future.”

Even after entering the entertainment industry in his twenties, Wong faced difficulties in making ends meet. “I’ve lived all over Singapore, constantly moving around. At one point, I even lived in public rental housing,” he added.

This experience left a lasting impression on him. “Many elderly people lived there. You’d often see ambulances because someone had passed away. You could smell death. The whole building felt gloomy and depressing.”

These early challenges deepened his appreciation for home and stability. “It’s only during tough times that you truly grow. Every experience I’ve had shaped my character and endurance, bringing me to where I am today.”

Wong’s major breakthrough came in 2018 when he portrayed Hai Lan Cha in the highly acclaimed Chinese period drama Story Of Yanxi Palace, which became the most Googled show worldwide at that time. This role transformed his life overnight.

Despite his newfound fame, he remains grounded. “I feel uneasy when life gets too comfortable, like something bad is about to happen. When things are too easy, that’s when you start to regress,” he humorously commented.

Nowadays, Wong actively contributes to the community by donating monthly to organizations like the Cat Welfare Society and the Singapore Cancer Society.

“You don’t need to be wealthy to assist others. Even when you have little, you can still give. Helping others doesn’t have to be grand; small deeds done with great love can make a difference.”

He emphasizes the support from others during his journey. “I remember being on the brink of giving up, and a well-known photographer told me I had potential and encouraged me to keep going,” he recalled.

This significant meeting led to everything changing for him. The photographer connected him with the Chinese actress Qin Lan, who signed him to her management and helped him secure the role in Yanxi Palace.

“In this industry, having support is crucial. When someone lends you a hand, it’s important to pass that kindness on. It’s all about the energy we exchange,” he noted.

This belief motivated him to join the 60 Lights, One Future initiative. “We’re all busy with our daily lives, and chances to help others are rare,” he explained.

Wong reflected on societal changes, stating, “People today tend to be more self-centered. It’s not that we don’t want to give; it’s more that we fear disturbing others. That’s why we must cultivate a habit of giving.”
