Kimmel Returns to Sinclair's ABC Stations, Ending Broadcast Blackout

Return of Jimmy Kimmel’s Show

Sinclair Broadcast Group has announced that Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show will return to its ABC affiliate stations this Saturday. This ends a period of significant disruption affecting many cities across the U.S., following comments made by Kimmel regarding the recent death of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

Sinclair’s Statement

In a statement, Sinclair emphasized its commitment to delivering accurate and engaging programming. “We take seriously our responsibility as local broadcasters to provide programming that serves the interests of our communities, while also fulfilling our obligations to air national network content,” the statement read.

Suspension Details

Disney-owned ABC initially suspended Kimmel’s show on September 17 due to threats stemming from comments made by the Trump-appointed head of the Federal Communications Commission. Nexstar, another affiliate group, had also planned to preempt Kimmel’s show prior to ABC’s announcement, leading to Sinclair’s condemnation of the host.

Call for Accountability

Sinclair, based in Maryland and known for its conservative programming, has publicly called for Kimmel to apologize to Kirk’s family. The network also requested him to “make a meaningful personal donation” to Turning Point USA, the nonprofit founded by Kirk.

Continued Blackouts

After ABC reinstated Kimmel’s show on Tuesday, Sinclair and Nexstar continued to preempt it, affecting viewers in Washington, DC, and Seattle. Sinclair noted that they had received “thoughtful feedback” from various community leaders regarding recent “troubling acts of violence.”

The Bigger Picture

The decision to preempt the show raised significant discussions about First Amendment rights, especially in light of the ongoing concerns over free speech. Sinclair reiterated that their actions were not influenced by government interactions and that broadcasters should exercise their judgment.

“While not everyone may agree with our programming decisions, it is inconsistent to champion free speech while calling for specific content to be aired,” they stated.

Community Backlash

With the blackout affecting many viewers, conversations about media influence and censorship have intensified. Nexstar has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding this matter.
