LOS ANGELES — Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, have taken legal action against Ray J. They allege that he made false claims about federal investigations into their activities, suggesting they might soon face indictment.
This defamation lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, represents a strong response against claims that the reality TV figures consider completely unfounded.
The lawsuit claims Ray J, whose full name is Ray Norwood Jr., falsely stated that he was in league with federal authorities investigating them for racketeering.
According to the court documents, Ray J has engaged in a “sustained campaign of harassment and defamation” against the duo over the years. The filing states, “Unable to accept the end of his fleeting relationship with Ms. Kardashian over twenty years ago, Ray J has repeatedly sought to attach himself to Plaintiffs’ names and exploit their prominence for personal gain.”
Two specific comments made by Ray J triggered the lawsuit. The first was during a TMZ special in May, where he suggested that “racketeering charges against the Kardashians would be appropriate” and expressed beliefs that such charges might be plausible.
In a livestream event on September 30, Ray J claimed that federal investigations concerning Kardashian and Jenner were about to escalate, stating, “The federal RICO I’m about to drop on Kris and Kim is about to be crazy” and hinted at comparisons to other high-profile cases.
Ray J did not provide any evidence to back his “blatantly false” statements, as emphasized in the lawsuit. The court documents assert, “No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations.”
Recognized as a musician and actor, Ray J is also known for his past relationship with Kardashian and the leaked sex tape from 2007.
The lawsuit argues that Ray J’s animosity toward the Kardashian family, combined with his tendency to exaggerate for notoriety, makes it clear that his statements were part of a calculated campaign intended to defame them and revive his own fading fame.
The Kardashian-Jenner family claims the fallout from Ray J’s comments has caused considerable reputational and financial harm, which they intend to quantify at trial.
