Karisma Kapoor’s Lawyer Challenges Priya Sachdev, Cites Children’s Welfare
Karisma Kapoor’s Legal Battle
The legal disputes surrounding Sunjay Kapur’s estate have intensified recently. Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, are at the forefront of this ongoing struggle against their stepmother, Priya Sachdev. Their lawyer has accused Priya of being an “acute gambler” and attempting to usurp their rightful inheritance.
Details of the Case
On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court reviewed new allegations in the inheritance case concerning the estate of Sunjay Kapur. Justice Jyoti Singh presided over the proceedings, emphasizing the plaintiffs’ claims. The children filed a lawsuit against their stepmother Priya Sachdev, her son Azarius, and the deceased’s mother, Rani Kapur.
During the hearing, Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Samaira and Kiaan, accused Priya of being a “gambler” whose actions might deprive the children of their legacy. He stated, “Good luck to her but not at the cost of two children being robbed of their inheritance.”
Jethmalani countered claims of greed from Priya’s legal team, suggesting their demands stemmed from deeper selfish motives. He argued that the will’s provisions seemed to exclude significant family members, notably asserting, “Her exclusion defies logic and decency.”
He further claimed that Priya controls a striking amount of the estate, stating she oversees 60% directly, 12% through her son, and 75% of the Kapur family trust. “This isn’t inheritance. It’s a takeover – under the guise of widowhood,” he remarked.
Context of Sunjay Kapur’s Estate
Sunjay Kapur, known for his role as chairman of Sona Comstar, tragically passed away while playing polo in London last June. It was later reported that he suffered a heart attack. Sunjay was previously married to Karisma Kapoor from 2003 until 2016, with whom he had two children, Samaira and Kiaan. In 2017, he married Priya Sachdev.
Now, the children of Karisma are questioning the flexibility and authenticity of their father’s will, claiming he had assured them repeatedly of their rightful share. In their view, Priya may have manipulated the will in her favor when she presented it during a family meeting in late July.
Priya has since requested the court to keep her late husband’s estate details confidential. Although the court originally hesitated, it ultimately permitted her to submit this information in a sealed format while allowing copies to be shared with the petitioners.
