Jaya Bachchan Shares Her Favorite Amitabh Bachchan Roles in Grey Characters
As Amitabh Bachchan marks his 83rd birthday on October 11, let’s revisit Jaya Bachchan’s insights about his film roles.
In a 2002 interview for Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday, Jaya shared her thoughts with Subhash K Jha. She discussed her plans to write a book titled *To Be Or Not To Be* for him as a birthday gift. Jaya elaborated on her favorite films featuring the iconic actor, emphasizing how she feels he is often underappreciated in the industry.
Jaya Bachchan’s Preference for Grey Roles
When Jaya discussed her favorite films featuring Amitabh, a common theme emerged: she adored his roles that showcased his complex, grey character. “In *Parivana* directed by Jyoti Swaroop, he plays a villain who commits a heinous act. In *Saudagar*, another negative role, he deceives a character played by Nutan. Additionally, his performance in *Agneepath* also features layers of moral ambiguity,” she revealed.
Jaya noted that Amitabh’s talent is hindered by the limited vision of creators in the industry. “He could achieve so much more, but it’s not his talent that restricts him. It’s the inadequacy of the characters being offered to him,” she added.
The Impact of Direction on Amitabh’s Performances
In the same interview, Jaya emphasized how directing influences Amitabh Bachchan’s performance. “His acting varies greatly depending on the director. The portrayal in a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film is starkly different compared to one in a Manmohan Desai film,” she observed. Jaya further noted that some directors tend to rely on his larger-than-life image instead of encouraging deeper character exploration, resulting in fewer challenging roles for him.
For fans who might not know, Jaya and Amitabh starred together in notable films like *Abhiman*, *Kora Kagaz*, and *Sholay*. They became a beloved on-screen couple and tied the knot on June 3, 1973, raising two children, Shweta and Abhishek Bachchan.
