Jason Momoa Hopes for New Zealand Citizenship: A Personal Touch

Jason Momoa, a prominent figure in Hollywood, is expressing his desire for a more permanent residence in New Zealand.
“I’m just waiting for you guys to let me in,” Momoa shared with 1News. “I read that we brought in about $1.3 billion over the past year and a half, so if that doesn’t grant me citizenship, then I’m not sure what will!”
The actor, now 45, has invested considerable time in New Zealand recently, collaborating on projects such as A Minecraft Movie, The Wrecking Crew, and his upcoming series Chief of War.
The New Zealand Film Commission indicates that the Minecraft film alone contributed more than $194 million to the local economy and facilitated over 1,000 jobs.
“I’ve been collaborating with a few of my filmmaking friends, aiming to develop all my projects centered in Aotearoa and Hawaii,” Momoa mentioned.
Momoa’s Vision for Polynesian Culture
He elaborated, saying, “Creating a central home for Polynesia, with work spanning both regions, is my ultimate aim. I don’t want to film anywhere else but these two locations.”
Having first visited New Zealand around 20 years old, the Hawaiian-born actor recalled, “The moment I landed there, something clicked. It felt like home. The environment is incredibly diverse, and the rugby team here is unparalleled.”
Momoa also expressed his love for both the ocean and the mountains, appreciating how the local culture is upheld. “I admire how Kiwis and Māori maintain each other’s languages and identities,” he said.
Government Response
Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden noted that Momoa would be met with open arms. “He will need to apply for citizenship through the proper channels at the Citizenship Office within the Department of Internal Affairs,” she stated.
She added, “I’m sure his many fans in New Zealand would be delighted to see him settle here.”
Upcoming Projects
Currently, Momoa is promoting his series Chief of War, which delves into the unification of Hawaii in the 18th century. The show, partially filmed in New Zealand, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ next month.
“I’m immensely proud of our crew and the hard work they’ve put into productions from Wrecking Crew to Minecraft and Chief of War,” he said. “Everyone involved has contributed to sharing our Polynesian narrative.”
