James Carter Cathcart, Voice Behind Pokémon’s Gary Oak, Passes Away at 71

James Carter Cathcart, the well-known American voice actor, has passed away at 71. He is most recognized for his work in the English-language dub of the Pokemon anime series, where he brought several beloved characters to life.
Cathcart first voiced Gary Oak, the rival of Ash Ketchum, from the beginning of the series. He later took on various other iconic roles, including Professor Oak and members of Team Rocket, such as James and Meowth.
His wife, Martha Jacobi, shared the news of his death on Facebook. She mentioned that Cathcart died on the morning of July 8 in a hospital located in New York City.
A funeral is planned for August, and Jacobi is discussing memorial designations with a charity that was significant to Cathcart.
“Thank you to all of Jimmy’s fans over the years! Bringing you joy was his motivation for dedicating himself to his craft. He truly appreciated your support!” Jacobi expressed in her message.
The cause of Cathcart’s death has yet to be disclosed. It was previously reported that he had retired in 2023 due to a battle with throat cancer.
This news comes just a year after the passing of Rachael Lillis, who was the original voice actress for Misty and Jessie in Pokemon.
