Is Morrissey Actually Selling His Shares in Smiths’ Music Rights?

Morrissey’s Recent Revelations
Morrissey has utilized the “Messages From Morrissey” section on his official website to express his concerns ranging from insufficient support from the music industry to feeling creatively isolated. These entries often resemble frustration-laden diary entries phrased as public announcements. His latest post, however, seems to carry more weight.
A Personal Statement
The post includes a striking quote from Morrissey himself: “I am burnt out by any and all connections to [former Smiths members Johnny] Marr, [Andy] Rourke, [Mike] Joyce. I have had enough of malicious associations.” He further expressed, “With my entire life, I have paid my rightful dues to these songs and these images. I would now like to live disassociated from those who wish me nothing but ill-will and destruction, and this is the only resolution.”
Smiths Reunion Talks
In the previous year, Morrissey claimed he accepted a “lucrative offer” from AEG Entertainment Group to reunite the Smiths with Marr. However, Marr rebuffed these assertions, clarifying, “I didn’t ignore the offer; I said no.”
Tragically, 2023 marked the passing of Smiths bassist Rourke after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer, making a true reunion impossible. Furthermore, drummer Joyce has been estranged from both Morrissey and Marr since a contentious lawsuit over Smiths royalties in 1996.
Protecting His Well-Being
Morrissey emphasizes in his quote, “The songs are me – they are no one else – but they bring with them business communications that go to excessive lengths to create as much dread and spite year after year.” He concluded with a call for self-protection, particularly concerning his health.
