Internet Criticizes Ismail Darbar for Misogynistic Remarks on Gauahar

Backlash on Ismail Darbar’s Comments
Ismail Darbar, a well-known music composer, has stirred controversy with his comments regarding his daughter-in-law, Gauahar Khan. During a recent interview, Darbar stated that he disapproves of women continuing to work after marriage and motherhood, drawing accusations of having a regressive attitude.
What Did Ismail Say?
In his comments, Ismail said, “I come from a backward family. We used to turn away whenever a sensuous scene came in a movie. That happens in our house even today. Gauahar is part of our family now, and we are responsible for her reputation.” He added that he believes the decision of whether or not she should work lies solely with his son, Zaid.
He further elaborated that his wife, Ayesha, left her career after becoming a mother, and he views that as a significant sacrifice for the family.
Reactions from Social Media
Online users reacted swiftly to Darbar’s statements. Many criticized his outdated views. One Reddit user remarked, “Who is going to earn then? Gauahar is the most famous and accomplished person in this family.” Another user questioned whether Zaid should have any authority over Gauahar’s career choices.
Numerous others pointed out the patriarchal tone of Darbar’s remarks, highlighting that Gauahar’s achievements far surpass those of her husband, Zaid Darbar. Comments included sentiments like, “It’s the same old mentality; if she’s a woman, she should stay home.” One user even joked, “Nagma still has time to run,” referencing Ismail’s other son Awez’s relationship with Nagma Mirajkar.
About Gauahar and Zaid’s Relationship
Gauahar Khan and Zaid Darbar tied the knot in December 2020 after meeting during the COVID-19 lockdown. They welcomed their first child, son Zehaan, in May 2023, followed by another baby boy in September 2025. Despite the backlash against Ismail’s traditional viewpoints, many fans continue to support Gauahar for managing her career and family life adeptly.
