Imtiaz Ali Celebrates ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ Film’s Int Emmy Nominations
A blessing that came with the story of ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’: Imtiaz Ali on film’s Int Emmy nods
Renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently shared that the nomination of “Amar Singh Chamkila” for International Emmy Awards feels like a blessing, emphasizing the universal appeal of stories steeped in local culture.
The film, which chronicles the life of tragic Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila, is nominated in the categories of TV Movie/Mini-Series and Best Performance by an Actor for lead star Diljit Dosanjh.
Ali expressed pride in how the film, released on Netflix in 2024, showcases India alongside major international talents. He remarked that the news of the nomination felt like a blessing that came with the story of Chamkila.
“We had just come back from dinner when we received the news. It’s uplifting to see this film gaining recognition,” he stated in a recent interview.
Local Stories with Global Appeal
Ali emphasized that achieving international recognition often stems from creating a story that is deeply local. He stated, “You shouldn’t try to adopt an international language. Speak your native tongue in cinema; that’s where the beauty lies.”
The narrative is set against the historic backdrop of Punjab during the 1980s, focusing on Chamkila’s music, which was both controversial and popular until his untimely assassination in 1988.
Dedication of the Cast
Imtiaz praised Diljit Dosanjh for embodying the essence of Chamkila, emphasizing that he set aside his superstar persona while performing in small villages, immersing himself completely in the character.
“At no point did Diljit stop being Chamkila,” Ali added, highlighting his actor’s phenomenal commitment to portraying a pivotal figure in Punjabi music history.
Ali also mentioned a collaborative project with Dosanjh, stating, “We are currently shooting our next movie together,” showcasing their strong professional relationship.
Authentic Representation of Punjab
While the depiction of Punjab isn’t new in film, Ali’s approach focuses on authentically capturing its tumultuous history through Chamkila’s musical journey. The film also features an impressive soundtrack, with contributions from Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman.
Ali remarked on the profound connection he felt while working in Punjab, stating, “Every moment spent in Punjab felt grounding and integral to this story.” This connection translated into the film’s thematic depth.
Backing from Netflix
Ali acknowledged the pivotal role Netflix played in making “Amar Singh Chamkila” a reality, particularly in overcoming various production challenges. He noted that as soon as Netflix became involved, obstacles vanished and the collaborative spirit flourished.
Shergill from Netflix emphasized the innovative storytelling approach that Ali adopted, noting that the film integrates various styles and weaves together a rich tapestry of songs to propel the narrative.
With a collection of 14 tracks recorded live, the film stands as a unique entry among Netflix’s offerings, showcasing a blend of music and storytelling that remains impactful and timeless.
