How Former MP Lee Bee Wah Built a Lasting Friendship with Benz Hui’s Family
The passing of cherished Hong Kong actor Benz Hui on Tuesday morning has deeply affected his friends in the entertainment industry and his loyal fans. Many have come forward to pay their respects, including former Member of Parliament (MP) Lee Bee Wah.
“We’ve lost a truly good man. I’m very sad,” Lee expressed. In a conversation with 8world vibes, she revealed that she immediately reached out to Hui’s wife, Angeli Lung, after learning he was critically ill.
“When I got the confirmation, my heart felt heavy. That morning, Angeli texted me, saying: ‘Ah Benz is gone.’ I was absolutely heartbroken,” she shared.
Lee reminisced about the special bond she formed with Hui. “Seven years ago, Benz and his family were looking to purchase a home in Singapore, and they chose one in Nee Soon South. I was serving as an MP at that time,” she said.
Although Hui gradually stepped back from acting in recent years, he and his family made Singapore their home, where they owned a S$4 million residence in Yishun. The couple’s daughter, Charmaine Hui, is now 29.
“During one of my walkabouts in the area, I spotted them inspecting some renovation work. We started chatting, took a photo together, and exchanged contact details. Later, they even invited me over for a meal at their new home,” Lee recounted.
Since their first meeting, Lee has assisted Hui’s family with various community matters and even helped Charmaine with challenges at her café, Bakeaholic, during the pandemic.
“Initially, they didn’t even know who I was, and I had to introduce myself! It turned out they thought I didn’t fit the typical MP mold; I was less formal and more straightforward. I felt like an older sister, which likely brought us closer as friends,” she shared.
Describing Hui, Lee characterized him as sincere, generous, and loyal. “After I left politics, I released a new book, Plantation To Parliament: My Story So Far, in 2022. Benz not only attended my launch event but came multiple times to support me,” she recalled.
“He even purchased over 400 copies to help me out. I was really touched by that gesture,” she remarked.
The family maintained a close relationship with Lee, often meeting up during visits to Singapore. She also attended Charmaine’s wedding to Singaporean banker Shane Sim, 30, at The Fullerton Bay Hotel last January.
“We always exchanged greetings during festive seasons. The last time I communicated with them was during this year’s Lunar New Year,” Lee explained.
She concluded with an emotional message to Hui’s family, expressing her ongoing support. “I hope his family remains strong during this tough time, and I wish for Foon Hei Gor to rest in peace,” she said.
