Hilltop Hoods Share Insights on the Power of Discussing Depression
Suffa, known as Matthew Lambert from the Hilltop Hoods, has recently discussed his experiences with mental health and depression. He shared the personal narratives behind two prominent songs from the group’s newest album, Fall from the Light.
Mental Health and Open Conversations
“Like many during the pandemic, I found my underlying issues rising to the surface,” he recalls. “I chose to speak to someone about my depression—it was a crucial step for me, as I had never opened up about it before. I now understand that I carried embarrassment, and it wasn’t until I labeled it and started discussing it that I began to manage it effectively.”
He emphasized the importance of dialogue: “I could only reach that point because others were candid about their struggles. I wanted my music to reflect an honest and relatable portrayal of depression, so others might feel seen and inspired to take action. The harm of shame is immeasurable, as I hold no such feelings.”
Reflecting on Family History
Lambert reflected on his family’s history, saying, “Looking back, I believe my dad dealt with similar struggles, and perhaps my grandpa did too. I want to take a proactive approach. I’ve experienced severe bouts of depression, but I feel I’m beginning to navigate through it. Writing ‘This Year’ served as a therapeutic release for me, helping me articulate my feelings. I hope many can resonate with this, regardless of gender.”
Upcoming Tour and Album Success
Hilltop Hoods will embark on a tour in early 2026 to celebrate their ninth album, Fall From the Light, which is available through Island Records Australia/UMA.
The ‘Never Coming Home’ tour will showcase their vibrant live performances in major cities, starting in Hobart on February 14th and moving on through Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.
When the ARIA Albums Chart was released on August 8th, Hilltop Hoods achieved the top spot with Fall From The Light.
This release marks their first album in six years and the sixth consecutive album to debut at No. 1.
