Hansal Mehta Responds to Troll Criticizing Deepika Padukone’s Work Hours
Hansal Mehta Advocates for Structured Work Hours
Recently, filmmaker Hansal Mehta joined actress Deepika Padukone in advocating for better working conditions in the film industry. His statements highlighted how long hours, often exceeding a standard workday, have become a norm that needs reevaluation.
Concerns Over Long Work Hours
In a detailed message on X, Mehta pointed out that a 12-hour workday is often considered standard in this industry. He stressed that this environment leaves little room for crew members to focus on their overall well-being. “Weekends are virtually nonexistent, and taking breaks feels like a luxury,” he expressed.
Mehta questioned, “Is this really an industry if it thrives on the relentless exhaustion of its workforce?” He particularly pointed out the plight of daily wage workers, who are often the first to arrive and the last to leave, working under harsh conditions.
Critique of Industry Practices
He expressed dismay that even large corporations adapt to this dysfunctional system because it proves financially beneficial. “We need to normalize the idea of taking rest. Without it, what foundation are we building?” he concluded.
Addressing the Trolls
When trolls criticized Deepika Padukone for speaking out, Mehta reflected on his own experiences. He recounted a project where he tried to maintain a reasonable 8-9 hour workday, but was consistently pressured to extend hours, leading to inefficiencies.
Reacting to those who dismissed Deepika’s situation as an issue of commitment, Hansal retorted, “Trolls will always be there. And honestly, I don’t care.” His assertion pushed back against the untenable expectations placed on actors and crew members alike.
Hansal Mehta most recently directed *The Buckingham Murders*, featuring Kareena Kapoor and the web series *Gandhi* starring Pratik Gandhi.
What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you think the film industry should implement better working conditions?
