Floods Impact British TV Star Noel Edmonds’ Wellness Center

Damage at River Haven Estate
British television presenter Noel Edmonds recently showcased the devastation at his River Haven estate in Ngātīmoti, following a severe weather event that struck the region last week. The estate spans approximately 320 hectares and was acquired by Edmonds and his wife, Elizabeth Davies, in 2022.
The property features a café, pub, vineyard, general store, and wellness center, making it a unique destination.
Reviewing the Impact
In a YouTube video, Edmonds highlighted the extensive damage, noting that he faced the loss of “three years of hard work” within mere hours. He shared footage of the wellness center, which he confirmed was constructed “in compliance with all local regulations,” yet still succumbed to the overwhelming force of the floodwaters.
Extent of Destruction
Edmonds emphasized that the wellness center was situated about 50 meters from the riverbank and roughly 10 meters above the ordinary water level. He lamented the destruction of beautiful treatment suites and gardens, mentioning that one suite was even dislodged from its foundation and swept across the creek. The external gym lost its doors, and a decorative bridge was severely impacted.

Community Resilience
Throughout the video, photos revealed the widespread destruction, with the main building’s floor blanketed in thick silt and mud. Edmonds shared his shock over the calamity while also voicing concern for local residents already grappling with economic difficulties.
He remarked, “We’re talking about individuals who were already facing challenging times. I genuinely wonder how they will rebound from this setback.”

Highway Concerns
Edmonds raised alarms about damage to the rock barrier along the highway adjacent to the River Haven estate. He described the protective work for the highway as critically important for both the community and New Zealand’s economy.
He noted, “The foundations of the highway are now vulnerable, and repairing this will require significant engineering efforts, especially given the winter conditions.”
Edmonds cautioned that any highway restrictions could adversely affect local businesses and community life, stating that closure of the highway would be disastrous for the South Island’s economy.
How can we support individuals and communities affected by such natural disasters?
