Exploring Dastangoi: Discovering Guru Dutt’s Legacy Through Storytelling
This year marks the centenary of filmmaker Guru Dutt, celebrated through a Dastangoi performance titled Daastan-e-Guru Dutt by Fouzia Dastango, highlighting Dutt’s cinematic contributions.
Guru Dutt was a visionary filmmaker who poignantly explored themes of love, loneliness, and longing in his films. Born on July 9, 1925, in Karnataka, he passed away at just 39 years old. In honor of this centennial year, the Dastangoi performance titled Daastan-e-Guru Dutt reflects upon his incredible legacy.
The captivating show, set to take place in the city, will be performed by Fouzia Dastango. “I’m not a film historian, so I aimed to handle this story authentically and respectfully,” she notes. Her admiration for Dutt, a towering figure in Indian cinema who never fully received the recognition he deserved, motivated her to create this Dastangoi performance. This tribute is especially relevant as we celebrate his centenary.
With Latika Jain lending her voice to the songs and a well-researched script by Abbas Qamar, this performance promises depth and sensitivity. “This isn’t just a tribute; it’s about giving voice to a man who spoke for all the unheard souls of cinema,” explains Fouzia. Collaborating with Asha Batra, a film documentation expert, helped ground their vision in solid research.
Vikaas Jalan, the show’s presenter, adds, “Guru Dutt’s enigmatic presence has always touched my heart. Each lyric and scene from his films conveys profound meaning. Through this Dastangoi, we aim to inspire the new generation to appreciate his extraordinary contributions to cinema.”
