Ex-Owners Critique Reopening Plans for Iconic Live Music Venue

The previous owners of Collingwood’s cherished live music venue, The Gasometer Hotel, have voiced strong criticism regarding its upcoming reopening. They allege they were shut out of the revitalization process and claim they are owed approximately $250,000 by the new management.
After closing its doors in March, the venue is set to return with a fresh vision led by Melbourne chef Scott Pickett and his son, Harry. Their plans include a pub and dining space that will honor the iconic bandroom, continuing the legacy of supporting live music.
“I aim to champion live music and create a pub for our community,” Pickett shared with The Age. “We’ll retain the back room for live performances, hosting themed nights, including comedy, a university night, open mic sessions for various acts, a jam night for emerging artists, and three nights dedicated to major live music performances.”
However, on July 31, the former owners took to social media with a scathing message. They accused the new operators of exploiting the venue’s legacy and disregarding its rich history.
“It’s likely easier to start a business when you owe the previous owners around $250,000,” they stated.
According to their claims, the landlords obstructed their attempts to sell the establishment, which ultimately led to the venue’s closure, liquidation, and job losses for the staff.
“This is no longer The Gaso. This is a cheap imitation that has chosen to disregard its legacy rather than uphold it. It feels more like something that has been taken, rather than saved,” they emphasized.
In light of the situation, the former team is advocating for fans to support other local live music venues instead.
The Legacy of The Gasometer Hotel
Over the years, The Gasometer has been a platform for numerous renowned artists, such as Jet, Mallrat, Paul Dempsey, and Kaiit. In recent times, it has also served as a vibrant space for emerging artists and independent bands.
