Emraan Hashmi Reflects on Accepting ‘Haq’ Through a Muslim Perspective
Emraan Hashmi discusses his film Haq, which draws inspiration from the Shah Bano case
Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi has recently been in the spotlight for his role in Aryan Khan’s show, The Ba***ds of Bollywood. Currently, his attention is on his upcoming film, Haq, featuring Yami Gautam. This film takes inspiration from the Shah Bano case, a landmark legal battle involving a Muslim woman from Indore who sought financial support after her divorce in 1978. Given Emraan’s own Muslim background, his decision to take part in this project raises intriguing questions. Speaking at HT City’s Stars In the City event on October 30, he shared insights into his motivations.
In the discussion, Chief Managing Editor Sonal Kalra posed a vital question regarding the potential risks associated with such a sensitive subject. Emraan confirmed that many had expressed concern, suggesting he could take an easier route with his career. He emphasized the importance of exploring diverse roles as an actor, noting, “As an artist, if we don’t risk things, that’s not art… those films are important as entertainers.”
Emraan elaborated further, stating, “Certain films leave a message and resonate with audiences long after the credits roll. I found merit in this story. From the original Shah Bano case, I was intrigued. When director Suparn Verma narrated it to me, I realized it was more than just a dramatization; it presented a nuanced interpersonal story.” He highlighted that the film is meant to be inclusive, reaching beyond cultural barriers and is not aimed at vilifying any community.
Emraan expressed a commitment to humanizing every character in the film. “I didn’t want to create a simplistic hero versus villain narrative. This story demands a more complex understanding,” he said. The film explores universal themes of love, law, and religion, touching on the struggles surrounding divorce, which many can relate to regardless of their background.
Haq is scheduled for release on November 7.
